ANGELIQUE HARRIS

Angelique Harris, Attorney

Angelique joined the DHM Law team as temporary maternity cover for a permanent employee and fit in so well that she was subsequently employed as an administrator on a permanent basis. Angelique’s love for law grew and she agreed to enroll for a LLB degree at UNISA a few years later. During her studies her role changed to a contract of articles, which she completed at DHM Law two years later. She has now completed her law degree and is an admitted and enrolled attorney.

Career

Johan started his career in 1971 in the Department of Justice and went on to become an additional magistrate. He joined local government in 1975 and inter alia served as the Deputy Town Clerk of Somerset West. Johan joined a Somerset West firm of attorneys during 1987. He is the co-founder of Du Plessis & Hofmeyr Inc. (established 1992) and of Du Plessis Hofmeyr Malan Inc. (established 2012).

Johan served as a municipal town councillor and as chairperson of the provincial appeal committee responsible for land use appeals. He has the right of appearance in the High Court and provides legal advice to numerous municipal councils, town planning and environmental firms and developers, especially as regards town planning and property development matters.

He actively and successfully participated in large scale property development for many years and gained invaluable experience and first-hand knowledge of the development industry and its challenges.

Johan has extensive knowledge of the application and enforcement of South African land use planning, environmental and administrative law and has assisted the provincial and municipal spheres of government with the drafting of legislation and government policies.

Track record highlights

  • Drafting of Western Cape Planning and Development Act 7 of 1999 and draft  regulations in terms thereof;
  • Former Chairman of the provincial appeal committee hearing appeals in terms of the Land Use Planning Ordinance, 15 of 1985;
  • Assisted with the drafting of the integrated zoning schemes (“IZS”) of the City of Cape Town;
  • Assisted with the review and drafting of model provincial zoning scheme regulations;
  • Former Mayor of Somerset West;

Career

Nikki obtained her LLB Degree while living in the United Kingdom and returned to South Africa to complete her admission examinations and contract of articles at Johan du Plessis Attorneys in Somerset West.

She is the co-founder of Du Plessis Hofmeyr Malan Inc (established 2012) and enjoys working in the fields of Conveyancing, Estate Planning and Administration, General Property Law, Sectional Titles, Home Owners Associations and other private law matters.

An internship at an international mining company influenced Mari’s decision to enroll for the LLB postgraduate degree and kickstarted her legal career.

Mari completed her articles at De Villiers-Mohr Attorneys where she gained experience across most legal areas of practice but developed a keen initial interest in employee relations and labour law. She was admitted as an Attorney of the High Court in 2012.

She subsequently joined a professional services firm operational in the built environment as inhouse legal advisor and certified HR professional with the SABPP and worked in the construction industry for 6 years. During her tenure in the construction industry she provided contractual and legal advice to project teams working on projects and property developments in both the Public and Private sectors and became proficient with industry standards, policies and standard agreements like the JBCC, GCC, NEC3, PROCSA and FIDIC.

Mari co-founded a boutique consulting firm in 2016 specialising in construction cost management, contract management, labour compliance and strategic human resources management. Mari joined the DHM Law team in 2020.

Nikki Malan, Director

Career

Nikki started her career in Human Resource Management after obtaining her B.A. Industrial Psychology Degree at the University of Stellenbosch.  She soon realised that her real interest lay in the law component of the position and she enrolled for her LLB Degree at UNISA while living and working as an HR Officer in the United Kingdom.  Upon completion of her LLB Degree she returned to South Africa with her family to complete her admission examinations and contract of articles.  She continued with post-graduate studies and qualified as a Conveyancer and Notary Public a few years later.

She is the co-founder of Du Plessis Hofmeyr Malan Inc (established 2012) and enjoys working in the fields of Conveyancing, Estate Planning and Administration, General Property Law, Sectional Titles, Homeowners’ Associations and other private law matters.

She wrote a weekly sectional titles article for Die Burger’s Eiendomme Bylae for a period of two years and regularly assists trustees, managing agents and home owners with various disputes, including the preparation of Community Scheme Ombud Service dispute applications, enforcement orders and appeals.  She further revises existing scheme rules and constitutions to ensure that they remain compliant and are in keep with the culture of the scheme community.

On the property development side she assists developers in the planning, execution and registration of new developments, which includes viability studies in collaboration with Town Planners, Environmental and Heritage consultants and the planning applications that follow.  She further assists home owners and estate agents with the sales of existing homes and commercial properties.

Career

Henk Jansen van Rensburg began his legal career in the police force as an Investigating Officer for the Commercial Crime Branch in 1986. During this time Henk completed his Baccalaureus Procurationis (B.Proc) degree through North West University.

In 1992 Henk was admitted as an attorney and he has worked in the legal sphere for over 30 years gaining a broad array of experience including criminal litigation, civil litigation, debt collection, deceased estates, and divorces. He has successfully closed complex transactions in the commercial and residential property field.

Henk is pragmatic, direct and confident in handling his instructions in contrast with his calm and engaging persona. While he has extensive experience, Henk specialises in conveyancing, property developments and project management. Henk is both a Conveyancer and a Notary Public.

Henk has 27 years’ conveyancing experience, which time has been mostly dedicated to property developments from inception to finalisation, including:
